Drowsy Driving Continues to Cause Fatal Accidents

Every day, many drivers take to the roads and fail to pay attention while behind the wheel. There are a myriad of distractions, from phones to other electronic devices, passengers, food, music and even smoking. Unfortunately, taking one’s eyes off of the road for a second or two can lead to a deadly crash and it is crucial for drivers to recognize how prevalent these collisions are.

Sometimes, drivers do not realize how dangerous it is to take their hands off of the wheel or their eyes off of the road, even for a short period of time. Moreover, losing one’s mental focus is very risky as well.

Drowsy driving and serious injuries

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy drivers were involved in an estimated 91,000 accidents reported by authorities during 2017. Often, drowsy driving crashes involve high speeds or head-on collisions, which increases the odds of a serious injury. Although many victims are lucky to survive, they often face a long road to recovery and some are never able to restore what they lose (such as those who are immobilized for the rest of their lives).

Drowsy driving and fatal wrecks

The NHTSA also reports that 795 people died due to drowsy driving in 2017. Those who pass away in drowsy driving wrecks often leave loved ones with debilitating emotional trauma that they will never recover from. Aside from the emotional toll of a deadly crash, which no amount of money can make up for, many family members experience significant financial hardships after their loved one dies in a wreck. Funeral costs and adjusting to daily life without the financial support of a spouse or parent is very hard for many victims, and they deserve justice.
